The short version: Nha Trang is for people who care most about sun, a warm sea all year and, if they are Russian-speaking, a community of their own, and who will work from home. Da Nang is for people who need a real city, an airport fifteen minutes away, international schools, coworking spaces and global companies next door, and who will sit through three wet months for it. We work only in Da Nang and know its numbers, so the comparison below is honest where we can back it up and careful where we cannot: we collect no Nha Trang prices and will not invent any.
Climate: the biggest difference
Da Nang sits in central Vietnam and has a proper rainy season: from October to December it pours for weeks, typhoons come through, low streets stand in water; December to February is damp and cool at 18-22 °C, and the sea is cold for swimming. March to September is heat and sun. What this means for a tenant is in our rainy season guide.
Nha Trang is further south, in a bay sheltered by islands. It rains there in autumn too, but shorter and softer, typhoons reach it less often, winters are warmer and you can swim almost all year. If you are moving for the sea every day, that is argument number one for Nha Trang, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Beach and city
My Khe in Da Nang is a long straight stretch of open sea with waves: beautiful and spacious, but red flags are common from September to January. Nha Trang's city beach is a bay along Tran Phu street, calmer, with islands on the horizon and hotels on the first line.
The cities themselves: Da Nang is about three times bigger, has a centre with markets and offices, three bridges across its river, an industrial zone and an IT park, universities, and it does not live on tourism alone. Nha Trang is a resort town: the centre is packed with hotels, tourists from China, Korea and Russia decide what is open and at what price, and behind the first line an ordinary Vietnamese city begins.
Getting there and the airport
Da Nang's airport is inside the city: 10-20 minutes to any area, direct flights to Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, charters in summer. Nha Trang's airport is Cam Ranh, over 30 km away, 40-60 minutes by taxi, every single time you fly. Hoi An is 30 minutes from Da Nang and Hue two hours; from Nha Trang the nearest city of that scale is Da Lat, three and a half hours through the mountains.
Russians, Koreans and everyone else
Nha Trang's Russian-speaking community is the largest in Vietnam, with signage, shops, doctors and schools in Russian. Da Nang has had noticeably more Russians since 2022, but the largest community here is Korean, followed by Chinese, Europeans and Americans; English as the common language works better than in Nha Trang. If you want to live among your own, that is Nha Trang. If you want to live among a mix, Da Nang.
Where exactly Russians and Koreans live in Da Nang is in our guide to the best areas to live; the quarter where you can live on foot and in English is An Thuong.
Work, schools, healthcare
Da Nang is the country's second IT city after Ho Chi Minh City: FPT, dozens of outsourcing firms, coworking in every area, conferences. There are several international schools with British, American and Singaporean curricula; which and at what fees is in our guide to Da Nang with kids. Private clinics working in English exist, and so do international-standard hospitals.
In Nha Trang the economy is tourism and everything around it. Remote work from any café is fine; finding a local job outside tourism is harder. There are fewer international schools, with Russian-language options among them. Healthcare is private clinics and the city hospital, with serious cases sent to Ho Chi Minh City.
Rent and prices
For Da Nang we can talk in numbers. Our catalogue as of 09.10.2026: furnished apartments in the new river and sea towers from $654 to $1,808. A full monthly budget is in our cost of living guide, and everything available now is on the apartments for rent page.
For Nha Trang we measure nothing and will quote nothing. One general observation from the listings: the centre of Nha Trang is dense with tourist apartments, so there is plenty of nightly and "monthly" stock, and a six-month lease with a proper deposit is harder to find than in Da Nang. Check the listings yourself on the date you decide.
Which city for whom
| What matters | Nha Trang | Da Nang |
|---|---|---|
| Sea all year | yes | no, cold and rough in winter |
| Rainy season | shorter and softer | October to December, typhoons |
| Airport | Cam Ranh, 40-60 minutes | in the city, 10-20 minutes |
| Russian-speaking community | the largest in the country | present, but Koreans outnumber them |
| English around you | weaker | stronger |
| Work outside tourism | little | IT, outsourcing, offices |
| International schools | fewer | several |
| A city rather than a resort | no | yes |
Our verdict, and it is biased because we live and work in Da Nang: for two weeks or a winter, Nha Trang; for a year or more, with a job, children and flights, Da Nang. Three wet months can be lived through; an airport an hour away and no real work around cannot.
How a move to Da Nang works, with visas, registration and the first steps, is in our guide to moving to Da Nang.
